Our Origins

From Central Asia to Gujarat

Tracing the journey of the Leuva Patidar community from its Aryan roots in Central Asia to its settlement across Gujarat, this timeline highlights the key migrations,
social developments, and milestones that shaped the community's identity over thousands of years.

The Aryan Migration

Approximately 4,000 years ago, Aryan ranchers and farmers from the Pamir highlands of Central Asia began migrating outward. Some moved west toward Europe and Iran, while others traveled south through Afghanistan into Punjab in the Indian subcontinent. These settlers established farming and cattle-rearing communities, laying the foundations of a prosperous and culturally advanced society.

The Four Classes & the Kshatriya Farmers

As described in the Rig Veda, society was organized into four groups based on skill, responsibility, and contribution: Brahmins (educators and advisors), Kshatriyas (defenders and leaders), Vaishyas (traders and landowners), and Sudras (workers and farmers). During times of peace, many Kshatriyas worked the land and became known as Kurmi Kshatriyas. Over centuries, the name evolved from Kurmi to Kunbi and eventually to Kanbi.

Migration to Gujarat

As populations grew and historical invasions brought hardship to Punjab, many Kurmi Kshatriya families migrated south in search of security and opportunity. Their journey took them through Rajasthan and into Gujarat, first settling in Saurashtra before moving to Vadnagar, Vadodara, and Bharuch. Communities had established themselves across Gujarat, where they became known by regional identities such as Leuva-Kanbi and Kadva-Kanbi.

The Rise of the Patel & Patidar Identity

As Kanbi families cultivated land and contributed to the agricultural growth of Gujarat, many were entrusted with managing village records. These leaders became known as Patels, while landholders who acquired ownership rights became known as Patidars, meaning "owners of land." Over time, these titles evolved into community identities, and hard work that continue to define the Leuva Patidar community today.
